NRCS Montana helps producers conserve the land.
Kokopelli helped tell their stories.
The Problem
The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Montana works with landowners on farms and ranches statewide providing them with equipment, training, technical assistance, and partnerships to improve the land. They wanted to reach more producers to show them how beneficial their programs and services could be.
The Solution
Kokopelli and NRCS MT collaborated to document the stories of independent farmers, ranchers, and private forest landowners who have been helped by NRCS. Kokopelli worked from pre-to-post-production to capture and craft their powerful and unique stories via video, writing, and photography.
The Result
NRCS MT now has a suite of 9 videos, with one additional video being shot over the course of 2-3 years, written articles, as well as 1,000 still photographs that are reaching agricultural producers across the country by highlighting conservation programs and services that are helping people to improve their land and their lives.
Kokopelli was diligent, professional, and excited to get to know NRCS Montana and our customers. They took the time to be prepared up front, which helped the on-site interviews go very smoothly. I look forward to working with them again!

VIDEO PLANNING AND PRODUCTION
The filming schedule included two back-to-back filming weeks spread across the state of Montana, which required close coordination between the Kokopelli team and NRCS Public Affairs Specialist, as well as with each NRCS field office and producer. Kokopelli conducted these kickoff meetings to determine expectations and itineraries, make travel and transport arrangements, and determine editing, review, and revision periods.
A key part of our production process involved working with NRCS to craft meaningful interview questions to best convey their message. Our team prepped both NRCS staff and agricultural producers to ensure all participants felt at ease and well positioned ahead of filming to elicit authenticity resulting in credibility with viewers. Additionally, we created an atmosphere where interviewees were comfortable on-camera, offering support as needed in a professional, kind, and respectful manner.
We remained proactively engaged with NRCS ahead of travel and during our time in Montana to ensure their satisfaction and accommodate any last-minute changes if needed. As a result, we were able to successfully capture compelling and informative stories as well as b-roll, providing high-quality deliverables.
PHOTOGRAPHY
NRCS Montana requested 1,000 still photos to capture outdoor scenes in a visually appealing manner to be used in a variety of agency publications; both online and print to further educate and inform government decision makers and private landowners.
In tandem with the video and articles, these interesting photographs tell the stories of Montana agricultural producers and the NRCS field officers who assist them by highlighting available technical assistance and financial programs and services meant to help landowners to reduce soil erosion, enhance water supplies, improve water quality, increase wildlife habitat, and reduce damages caused by natural disasters including fire and flooding.
The talented writing team at Kokopelli subsequently created content for 1,000 attention-getting captions to pair with each photograph telling the story.

COPYWRITING
NRCS wanted written success stories to accompany each video to help communicate the importance and success of private lands conservation throughout Montana. The experienced writers at Kokopelli collaborated with the cinematographer and producers to craft impactful articles that reach audiences and accompany the videos.
Each article started with a Kokopelli writer getting to know the producer and their unique story of conservation as well as how NRCS helped them along the way.
Through the feedback and editing process, our writers focused on telling the story of each landowner’s achievements while helping readers learn about how NRCS conservation programs and services can help them.
